Maui’s Hotel Wailea Is Redesigned, Revamped and Ready

The Relais & Châteaux group has been an authority in the world of luxury hospitality since the 1950s. The group’s collection of affiliates includes hundreds of elegant independently-owned hotels and restaurants around the globe, the newest of which, is Hotel Wailea in Maui; the picture-perfect island resort for a romantic getaway.

Jonathan McManus, the hotel’s owner, is proud to be a part of the esteemed group and expects the new classification to up Hotel Wailea’s ante in the world of travel. “It’s an honour for Hotel Wailea to be admitted into the Relais & Châteaux family,” he said.

The boutique hotel has recently undergone a $15 million renovation and redesign by Honolulu interior designer Marion Philpotts-Miller, who cleverly maintained the hotel’s indigenous Hawaiian charm while infusing it with a sleek, contemporary air. The hotel’s details such as smoked white oak floors, bespoke local cabinetry and coral and limestone walls are all complemented by the artwork of iconic surfer-artist Pete Cabrinha.

Following the ever-growing farm-to-fork movement, the hotel’s restaurant, “Capische?,” serves fine Southern Mediterranean-inspired cuisine made from fresh ingredients produced by the island’s farms, fishermen and the hotel’s gardens.

The hotel grounds cover 15 acres of lush greenery, with a landscape perched on a hill 300 feet above sea level. The hotel’s reputation as the ultimate couples retreat is certainty not unmerited; ultra-private suites, tiki torch and lantern-lit cabanas and surrounding blossoming gardens and waterfalls evoke a romantic mood worthy of a tropical fairy tale.

Regular yoga events sponsored by Lululemon, on-site kiteboarding lessons, an ocean-view treehouse spa and, of course, the crystal-clear ocean itself are sure to keep visitors busy from the moment their toes touch the island sand to the moment they leave.
